The American Dog has proven to be my strongest and most iconic sculpture to date. The profile of the dog is very much of a muttigree, but I have had many people tell me it looks exactly like their particular breed of dog. It strikes a strong emotional pull with many clients.
Therefore, when I started to contemplate the idea of creating a large scale public art exhibit, my American Dog made the most sense for choice of sculpture. Historically, dogs have made positive and lasting impressions with people and I hoped that my sculptures and the exhibit would do the same.
TheBig Dog Show premiered in 2009 as the largest solo exhibit in New England, touring 6 city parks in 3 states over the course of the summer. It was also a part of ArtPrize in 2010 and continues to tour in 2011 & 2012, in conjunction with Humane Societies and/or cultural art committees.
I can travel all over the country with the dog for shows and people will stop me and say " Is that the dog from the highway?". There is a 16 foot tall version of my American Dog in Massachusetts on Route 495 South at exit 48. It has become a highly visible landmark & icon for all in the region. My hope is to one day replace it with a 43 foot tall dog, thus making it into the record books as the largest dog sculpture around !
My first American Dog was made in 2004, since that time I have made small, subtle changes to the design over the years ( as you can see in the pictures). The video below shows the most recent version f0r 2011. It is available in 4.5' and 6' sizes.
